ARTIST STATEMENT

In her world stairs can be up-side-down, wood becomes weightless, triangular shapes balance on a point, a tree emerges from the architecture and a globe hangs by a thread: Lucia uses abstract forms in drawing and sculpture, playfully disrupting perspectives, materials and scale to draw attention to our relationship with the physical world.

The drawings are surreal structures that sit between the real and imagined. There is an interplay of a diagrammatic and gestural approach, employing multiple visual languages; the sense of play and absurdity contrasts the seriousness of hard edges and sharp corners. She develops the images organically, creating and undermining structural coherence. Her sculptures are nonsensical objects which allow the viewer to experience part of the drawings in reality, simultaneously highlighting the disparity between the freedom of imagination in drawing and the physical limitations within the material world.

Lucia’s work encourages consideration of our position in the physical world and the role of imagination during an increasingly digital age. These pieces speak to our humour and corporeality, engaging the viewer in an imagined journey or bodily experience.
